This is an extension/off-shoot of my blog "Useless Faith"
How are we to respond to the "Christian" who claims belief in Christ as defined by "Having accepted Him as their Savior; believing that He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died a substitutionary death on the cross for the forgiveness of sin, and was physically resurrected from the grave as the seal to the promise of everlasting life," BUT who nevertheless shows no inclination or desire to maintina a living relationship with God through Christ?
For my part I have come to understand that the confidence of many of these people rests in "their faith in their right beliefs." Because they believe these things they are confident that they will be saved. However this faith (confidence in a declaration of beliefs) is dead. What's worse is that their confidence is bolstered becasue thier understanding of saving faith (intellectual assent to the right beliefs) is what is largely taught in most evangelical churches. This kind of faith (belief in the historical reality of Jesus, and it's eternal significance, WITHOUT a personal and dynamic life giving relationship) is not salvation.
Slavation is...
An Abandonment of any confidence in our own doing (our believing included) and a throwing ourselves on the mercy of the God, shown to us in the work of Christ, trusting in His promises/person/love/character and grace to save us. This is our only hope for salvation. This is a relational faith. It is a trusting in God to do what He said He would do. He births us anew!
I fear for those who's only hope is that they have "believed the right truths," thinking that this alone entitles them to eternal life, when in fact they have never expereinced the life-transforming power of God's grace to save! They have never died to "do-it-on-my-own-terms" salvation," and cast all their hope upon the grace of God to save them.
